Tribute & Message From The Family

Message From The Family

Thank you for your support during this difficult time. Please enhance this tribute to Nia by adding your memories and photos.

Eugenia "Nia" Caros Pleat, 93, of Manchester, died on November 6, 2018, at Hillsborough County Nursing Home in Goffstown. She was born in Nashua on August 20, 1925, to Nicholas and Evangeline Caros. Nia graduated from Nashua High School in 1943, and went on to work in the payroll department at Nashua Gummed and Coated Paper Company. After the unexpected death of her father, she took a leave from her job at the paper company, to help manage the family grocery store. She later returned to Nashua Paper, working until her marriage to James Pleat on June 18, 1950. Nia and James raised their two children, Janice and Philip, living in Connecticut, Maine and New Hampshire.

Nia was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. She was an active member in her many churches throughout her life. For the past forty years, she was a member of Saint George's Greek Orthodox Cathedral, donating many hours on church initiatives. She was a member of the Daughters of Penelope, NOA Women's Auxiliary Club, Manchester Tri-Orthodox Guild, Anagenesis Ladies Society and the Red Hatters Society. Later in life, Nia enjoyed "spoiling" her four grandchildren, Jennie, Gregory, Nicholas and James, and attending their various childhood events. She loved to dance, entertain, travel, and spend time with her family and friends. She was an extraordinary cook, who impressed many with her perfected family recipes of Greek cuisine.

Nia was known for her warm, genuine, open, and unconditionally loving heart. She was not just a mother, grandmother, sister, or aunt to her family, rather she gave of herself graciously to all she would meet. She welcomed everyone and all into her home, and reached out to anyone she knew was in need. Nia became the matriarch of her extended family, organizing holidays and reunions, and keeping family connections strong. She was a model of goodness and love for all.

Eugenia is survived by her daughter, Janice Kanteres and her husband, Gregory, of Hampton; her son, Philip J. Pleat and his wife, Lisa (Leonard) of Nashua; four grandchildren, Jennie Pleat of Somerville, MA; Gregory Kanteres of Portland, OR; Nicholas Kanteres and his wife Alexia, of Eureka, MO; and James Pleat of Cambridge, MA; and a great grandson, Logan of Eureka, MO. She is also survived by three nieces, Helen Phofolos, Marina Atsalis amd Dorothea Olin, several grand nieces and nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews. Eugenia was predeceased by her husband, James Pleat; a sister, Aphrodite Hatzis; and three brothers, Paul, Achilles, and Constantine (Charlie) Caros.

Special thanks are given to the staff at Hillsborough County Nursing Home, who provided compassionate care throughout Eugenia's stay.

Services: Her Visitation will be at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 650 Hanover St., Manchester, NH., on Friday, November 16, from 10:00-11:00A.M. Her Funeral Service held in St. George Greek Orthodox Church at 11:00A.M. Committal Service will follow the ceremony at Woodlawn Cemetery, 101 Kinsley St., Nashua. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 650 Hanover St, Manchester, NH, 03104 or Alzheimer's Association, 166 S. River Rd #210, Bedford, NH, 03110.
